Credit transfers

Prospective and current Monash University students can only apply for credit toward the course they are currently enrolled in. This includes either credit transfer for previous study or recognition of prior learning.

How to apply for credit

  1. Download, print and complete the Credit Application form
  2. Attach the certified supporting documents (these will not be returned).
  3. Send your application to:
    Monash University Malaysia,
    Jalan Lagoon Selatan,Bandar Sunway
    47500 Petaling Jaya
    Selangor Darul Ehsan, Malaysia
  4. Your school will send you written notification about the outcome of your credit application. You should enrol assuming that credit has not been granted until you are notified otherwise.

Documentation to include

Applications for credit from all studies not completed at Monash University require an original or certified copy of your academic results and unit syllabus (units synopsis, assessment, number of hours, textbooks used) for the year the unit was studied. If photocopies are provided, they need to be certified by a person authorised to witness a statutory declaration. Where this information is in a language other than English, you must provide a translation by an accredited translator.

Applications for credit for informal or non-formal learning must provide relevant evidence, as determined by the faculty. This may include an interview and/or challenge tests or assessments, and/or a folio of creative work to confirm that the applicant has achieved the requisite learning outcomes.

Applications for credit for previous study at Monash University or Monash College will not be required to provide extra documentation if this information is available from the student management system and handbooks.

University policy and procedures

Monash University has a policy on credit (including recognition of prior learning) and procedures for credit transfer. Make sure you also check if your faculty or school has specific policies on credit transfer and RPL.

Processing times

If your request is straightforward, we normally assess applications for:

  • credit transfer within 10 working days
  • recognition of prior learning within 20 working days.

A longer period may be needed if a full assessment is required, particularly at peak admission and enrolment times.

Types of credit

Specified credit

Credit for specific Monash University units – identified by their unit code.

Discipline-specific credit

Credit that is specified only by credit point value, level and discipline, but not by unit codes. That is, the credit is identified as being within the discipline, but not as equivalent to any specific unit. It may contribute to completion of major, minor or sequence requirements but may not stand in place of a core unit.

Unspecified credit

Credit that is specified only by credit point value and level. It can only contribute to course completion by standing in place of elective units.

Where, on the basis of previous similar study, a student is waived the requirement to pass a core unit, but in its place is required to complete another unit of the same credit point value.

Block credit

Involves credit being granted for a whole section of a course, such as a semester or year of full-time study in the course, rather than for specific units.

Recognition of prior learning (RPL)

This is a process that assesses the individual's non-formal and informal learning to determine the extent to which that individual has achieved the required learning outcomes, competency outcomes, or standards for entry to, and/or partial or total completion of, a qualification.

Research degree

This credit application process is only applicable to coursework. Credit arrangements for research degree programs are governed by the regulations of the Monash University Institute of Graduate Research.

You‘ll find the regulations in the handbook for research master’s degrees and doctoral degrees.
